Hubert Grindle

Hubert Alexander Grindle - convicted of "sodomy & manslaughter". Hubert was born March 12, 1907 in Akron, Ohio to Charles H. Grindle and Christina A. Hammond. His father was also from Ohio, his mother from Indiana. On April 5, 1930 he is already a prisoner at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He listed his occupation as "Cook", this may have been his work detail while in prison. LaFayette Thomas was listed on the same page. In fact, Hubert and LaFayette both arrived at Alcatraz on the same day and when the 1940 census was taken they had been there the longest - of the convicts charged with sodomy. He was an army prisoner and was released early on "good time" in 1944. He died September 5, 1972 in La Mesa, San Diego, California.
